Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir elected President of Bangladesh FAST-MOVING

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has been elected as the 23rd President of Bangladesh. The election, held at the Jatiya Sangsad, was the first contested presidential vote in the country in 35 years.

Alamgir secured 255 votes, defeating the opposition candidate, Colonel (Retd) Oli Ahmed, who represented an 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party. Ahmed received 88 votes. Out of 349 eligible Members of Parliament, 343 cast valid ballots under the supervision of Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin.

The election was triggered by the resignation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin on July 24, who cited health reasons for stepping down. Alamgir, who previously served as the BNP Secretary General, is scheduled to be sworn in at Bangabhaban on Friday, August 21, 2026.
