Ganges Water Treaty: India and Bangladesh continue technical discussions

India's Ministry of External Affairs has stated that discussions regarding the Ganges Water Treaty with Bangladesh are continuing at a technical level. According to spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, all matters concerning the Ganges and other shared rivers will be addressed through the existing Joint River Commission.

This announcement follows reports that the Bangladesh government is reviewing 101 bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding signed with India. Nurul Islam Moni, Chief Whip of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad, clarified that the review is intended to identify and resolve any inconsistencies to ensure the agreements serve Bangladesh's national interests, rather than to cancel them.

The current 30-year Ganges water-sharing treaty, signed on December 12, 1996, is scheduled to expire on December 12. Bangladesh has expressed interest in a new agreement that ensures water distribution is based on availability and provides equal sharing between the two nations.
