India and France advance major Rafale fighter aircraft programs

India’s Ministry of Defence has signed several major defence contracts for the 2025-26 fiscal year, including the acquisition of 97 LCA Mk1A fighter aircraft. Deliveries for these aircraft, comprising 68 fighters and 20 twin-seat models, are expected to run from September 2027 to September 2033. Additionally, the Indian Navy will acquire Rafale Marine (Rafale-M) fighter aircraft to enhance maritime strike capabilities and sea control, with agreements including technology transfers for indigenous weapon integration.

Other significant Indian contracts include an indigenous Articulated All-Terrain Vehicle from Larsen & Toubro for difficult terrains like Eastern Ladakh, and a 5.56×45 mm Close Quarter Battle Carbine developed by Bharat Forge and PLR Systems. Bharat Dynamics Limited has also developed the INVAR 3UBK-20 laser-guided missile for the T-90 fleet.

In France, development is accelerating for the Rafale F5, a next-generation fighter variant aimed at maintaining operational edge through the 2040s. Contracts have been awarded to Dassault Aviation, MBDA, Safran, and Thales to support this program. The Rafale F5 is intended to carry the future ASN4G nuclear missile to replace the ASMP-A, ensuring France’s nuclear deterrence capabilities. The upgrade will also feature advanced radar technology, such as the RBE2-XG being developed by Thales, to improve detection and survival in electronic warfare environments.
