India and Japan sign maritime security pact and agree to joint naval development

India and Japan have significantly deepened their defense and security partnership following a meeting between Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and Indian officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi.

A key outcome of the talks was the signing of a Memorandum of Arrangement on Maritime Security Cooperation. This agreement establishes a framework for enhanced cooperation between the Indian Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, specifically targeting Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), Search and Rescue (SAR), and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR).

The two nations also agreed to explore joint development in naval shipbuilding and design. This initiative aims to combine Japan's advanced technological expertise with India's manufacturing capabilities under the 'Make in India' framework. Both sides emphasized the importance of protecting sea lines of communication through joint exercises, naval ship visits, and logistical support.

The strengthened ties are intended to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific. Both countries expressed opposition to unilateral actions that attempt to change the regional status quo through force or coercion, a stance widely viewed as a response to growing regional tensions.
