India and Myanmar discuss border demarcation with possible land swap in Manipur

India and Myanmar share a 1,643‑km frontier that runs through Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. About 171 km of the border remains undemarcated, chiefly in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

At a weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said discussions are ongoing on the unsettled sectors but did not confirm a land‑swap. Media reports cite a proposal to exchange roughly 1.4 square miles of territory in Manipur’s Chandel district, between border pillars 65 and 68, to complete demarcation and enable fencing of the border.

The move is intended to strengthen security and curb illegal immigration, insurgent movement and cross‑border crime, especially after India ended the Free Movement Regime. Civil‑society groups in Manipur, such as the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), have opposed any territorial exchange.
