India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement enters into force

The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) officially entered into force on October 20, 2026. The pact aims to double bilateral trade in goods and services to 7 billion NZD by 2030 and is expected to attract 20 billion USD in investment into India over the next 15 years.

Under the agreement, Indian exporters receive 100 percent duty-free access to the New Zealand market, benefiting sectors such as textiles, leather, footwear, and engineering goods. For New Zealand, the deal removes tariffs on more than half of its exports to India immediately, with a goal of reaching 95 percent reduction or removal over time. Key benefits for New Zealand include the removal of tariffs on sheep meat, wool, and coal, as well as significant reductions for wine exports, which will drop from 150% to between 25% and 50% over a decade. The kiwifruit industry is also expected to see substantial savings and improved market access.

While the agreement opens vast opportunities for MSMEs, professionals, and students, both nations have emphasized the protection of sensitive sectors, such as India's dairy industry. The implementation of the FTA is seen as a strategic move to strengthen economic ties and supply chain integration in the Indo-Pacific region.
