India and Pakistan pursue railway modernization via private partnerships
India and Pakistan are both pursuing public-private partnership (PPP) models to modernize their respective railway infrastructures.
India Railways is undertaking a redevelopment program for 15 major stations, including Chennai Central, Coimbatore Junction, Vadodara, and Vijayawada. The Vijayawada project has received approval for a ₹946.60 crore investment to transform the 49.92-acre site into a modern transit hub. Other stations are currently in the planning and financial modeling stages.
In Pakistan, Pakistan Railways plans to outsource the operation and upgrading of three concrete sleeper factories located in Khanewal, Sukkur, and Kohat Cantt. The state-owned operator is seeking private companies for a 15-year concession period to rehabilitate aging machinery and increase production capacity to meet the demand for railway track projects.
