India and Pakistan reflect on 79 years since partition

As India and Pakistan mark their 79th years of independence following the 1947 partition of British India, both nations reflect on their foundational histories and the conflicts that shaped them.

Pakistan’s journey began with the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and was immediately marked by the mass migration of approximately 10 million people. The nation's early years were characterized by the first Indo-Pakistani War over Kashmir, which led to a UN-ordered ceasefire and the establishment of a de facto border. The 1950s brought political instability, including the assassination of Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan and various constitutional crises.

India’s post-colonial transition focused on establishing civilian control over its military and integrating princely states. Following the partition, military assets were divided between the two nations, with India receiving the majority of army, air force, and navy resources. India's new defense structure was tested during the 1947-48 Kashmir War, which involved military action to integrate Jammu and Kashmir after the signing of the Instrument of Accession.
