South Asian economies report shifts in forex reserves and commodity demand
South Asian economies are reporting varied shifts in their financial and commodity landscapes. India’s foreign exchange reserves saw a significant weekly jump of approximately $14.1 billion, reaching $707 billion, driven largely by increases in foreign currency assets and gold reserves. Additionally, India’s coal import patterns are shifting toward metallurgical coal to support its steel sector, with Russia emerging as a key supplier.
In Pakistan, total liquid foreign exchange reserves reached $22.498 billion as of August 7, providing roughly 2.5 months of import cover. However, the country faces inflationary pressures, with the Sensitive Price Indicator rising to 9.11 percent year-on-year, driven by high food prices.
Sri Lanka continues its economic recovery, with foreign exchange reserves rising 2.1 percent to $6.59 billion in July. The nation has also seen increased foreign investment in rupee bonds, totaling $4.1 million in the week ending August 14, amid a stabilizing currency.
