India and Russia explore new maritime and rail trade corridors

India and Russia are exploring multiple alternative trade corridors to enhance connectivity and bypass traditional maritime chokepoints. India plans to conduct its first cargo voyage through Russia’s Northern Sea Route (NSR) in 2027. This Arctic maritime corridor could offer a shorter connection between Asia and Europe compared to the Suez Canal, though it faces challenges regarding seasonal ice conditions and specialized vessel requirements.

Simultaneously, Russia is investigating the feasibility of an overland rail link to connect its markets with India and the Indian Ocean. Proposed by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin, this potential corridor could transit through countries such as Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Such a route aims to reduce dependence on vulnerable maritime passages like the Strait of Hormuz and the Bosphorus Strait.

These developments occur as India continues to increase its imports of Russian crude oil and both nations seek to strengthen logistics and infrastructure amidst shifting geopolitical risks and global supply chain disruptions.
