India and Sri Lanka Test cricket rivalry history and records

The Test cricket rivalry between India and Sri Lanka spans over four decades, marked by significant individual performances and historic team records. Since their first Test encounter in September 1982, the matchup has produced several notable milestones.

In the inaugural 1982 Test, Sri Lankan batsman Dilip Mendis became the first Sri Lankan to score two centuries in a single Test against India on Indian soil, recording 105 runs in both the first and second innings. Another major milestone occurred during the 1997 Colombo Test, where Sri Lanka set a world record Test score of 952 for the loss of six wickets.

In 2008, during a Test match in Galle, Indian batsman Virender Sehwag played a decisive role in a 170-run victory for India. Sehwag scored an unbeaten 201 runs from 231 balls, effectively countering the mystery spin of Ajanta Mendis, who took six wickets but conceded 117 runs in 28 overs. Sehwag was named Player of the Match for his performance.
