India accelerates electronics manufacturing with ₹69,548 crore investment

India is significantly expanding its electronics and semiconductor manufacturing capabilities through various government initiatives. Under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has approved 106 projects with a cumulative investment of approximately ₹69,548 crore. These projects, spread across 15 states, are expected to create nearly 75,000 direct jobs and up to 250,000 indirect employment opportunities.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that the industry is transitioning from simple assembly to the production of sophisticated components and raw materials. India has achieved 100% self-reliance in categories such as enclosures, relays, and optical transceivers, and has begun exporting printed circuit boards to China. Other areas, including lithium-ion cells and laminates, have reached 60% and 80% domestic capability, respectively.

In the semiconductor sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi to bolster the nation's chip ecosystem. Concurrently, states like Odisha are refining their strategies by increasing subsidies to 35% to attract specialized manufacturing, such as outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing (OSAT) and advanced packaging, to complement the large-scale fabrication efforts seen in states like Gujarat.
