India Ministry of Defence signs Rs 53,866 crore contracts for eight navy corvettes

The Indian Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth Rs 53,866.50 crore for the construction of eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Indian Navy. The agreements were signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

Under the arrangement, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) will construct five warships, while Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) will build the remaining three. This project marks the first instance where warships designed indigenously by the Indian Navy will be constructed by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) selected through a competitive bidding process.

The new vessels are expected to feature advanced missile systems, weapons, and sensor suites, enabling operations across air, surface, and sub-surface domains. The project aims to strengthen maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and coastal defence capabilities.

Economically, the construction is projected to generate approximately 72 lakh person-days of employment at shipyards and an additional 460 lakh person-days within ancillary industries and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) over the next decade.
