India’s Ministry of Education has approved the establishment of five Centres of Excellence (CoEs) dedicated to the study and preservation of classical languages. The initiative aims to strengthen the institutional ecosystem for advanced academic research, documentation, and the digitisation of linguistic and literary heritage.
The five designated centres and their respective locations are:
• Classical Assamese: Tezpur University, Assam • Classical Bengali: Visva-Bharati University, West Bengal • Classical Marathi: Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Maharashtra • Classical Pali: Central University of Odisha, Odisha • Classical Prakrit: Central University of Gujarat, Gujarat
The centres will focus on four primary objectives: providing platforms for scholarly research, supporting the preservation and digitisation of ancient textual resources, facilitating wider dissemination of knowledge traditions, and strengthening regional academic ecosystems for higher education.
