India approves ₹1.86 lakh crore Green Energy Corridor and biogas schemes
The Indian Union Cabinet has approved two major clean energy initiatives: the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) and the GOBARdhan National Unified Scheme for Compressed Biogas.
The GEC-III programme has a total outlay of ₹1,86,405 crore and is aimed at strengthening intra-state transmission systems to facilitate the evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy. The project includes ₹1,36,378 crore for transmission systems and ₹50,000 crore for 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to manage grid flexibility and intermittency. The programme is targeted for completion by FY 2032-33 and includes ₹54,082 crore in Central Financial Support to help lower power costs.
Separately, the Cabinet approved the GOBARdhan scheme with an outlay of ₹23,731 crore, to be implemented from FY 2026-27 to FY 2035-36. This scheme aims to increase domestic compressed biogas (CBG) production nearly ten-fold. It establishes a stable administered CBG price of ₹2,110 per MMBTU and provides a framework for City Gas Distribution entities to meet blending obligations.
