India approves massive defence acquisition proposals to boost indigenous manufacturing

India's Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved significant capital acquisition proposals to accelerate military modernisation and bolster indigenous manufacturing. The approvals, totaling approximately Rs 6.73 lakh crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year, cover a wide range of platforms and technologies for the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Key technological advancements include the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM-I) system, an indigenous DRDO-designed and BEL-developed air defence solution. Other major approvals include an indigenous 1,350 HP engine for T-90 tanks to improve high-altitude mobility, and the Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System Mk-II for counter-drone capabilities.

The Navy's requirements include Arudhra radars, indigenous marine gas turbine development, mine countermeasure vessels, and landing platform docks. The Air Force proposals feature the Netra AEW&C Mk-1A airborne early warning system, MALE remotely piloted aircraft, the SPICE-1000 long-range strike weapon, and ground-based multi-purpose jammers. Approximately 98% of the approved procurement is directed toward the Indian sector to reduce dependence on foreign vendors.
