India Defence Ministry clears ₹2.12 lakh crore procurement proposals

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has granted in-principle approval for capital acquisition proposals totaling approximately ₹2.12 lakh crore for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. This decision, which involves the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) stage, aims to modernize India’s military capabilities and strengthen its indigenous industrial base, with roughly 82 per cent of the procurements designated for Indian industry.

The Indian Army’s approved acquisitions focus heavily on unmanned warfare and mobility, including long-range kamikaze drone systems, platform-based counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) to protect tanks, very short-range air defence systems (VSHORADS), and high-mobility vehicles. The Army also seeks self-propelled tracked gun systems, gunshot response systems (GSRS) for real-time situational awareness, and light multi-role helicopters (LMRH).

For the Indian Navy, the council approved the procurement of an Active Offboard Decoy System (AODS) to enhance anti-missile defences against modern anti-ship missiles, alongside other major indigenously designed naval platforms. The Indian Air Force’s proposals include helicopters, air defence systems, weapons, and mobile X-band Doppler weather radar systems. Additionally, a separate ₹20,000 crore proposal was cleared to procure 335 indigenous K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers to bolster firepower in high-altitude regions like Ladakh.
