India Approves Rs 84,084 Crore ‘Samudra Manthan’ Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration Scheme
The Union Cabinet approved the Samudra Manthan National Offshore Exploration Scheme with a budget of Rs 84,084 crore, to be implemented through FY 2030‑31. The programme will fund large‑scale seismic surveys, deep‑water and ultra‑deep‑water exploratory drilling, scientific drilling in frontier basins, and the creation of common offshore production and evacuation infrastructure, including an integrated oil‑and‑gas manufacturing and services zone. The government expects the scheme to identify more than 600 million metric tonnes of oil‑equivalent (MMTOE) reserves, boost domestic oil and gas output, generate employment and attract investment, and reduce India’s reliance on imported crude – about 85 % of its consumption. State‑run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has announced a plan to drill 150 deep‑water wells over seven years, targeting roughly 5,600 MMTOE of hydrocarbon potential. The initiative is presented as a key element of India’s energy‑security strategy and its broader “Make in India” and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals.
