India arrests two individuals for fake social media scams

The Surat City Crime Branch arrested 25‑year‑old fashion video creator Aditya Baraiya for circulating a fabricated social‑media post that falsely claimed a tribute to a girl at the Jantar Mantar protest in New Delhi. Police said the post was intended to spread rumors, incite hostility and disturb public peace, and charged him under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.

In Kancheepuram, cyber‑crime officers detained 35‑year‑old Karthik of Thanjavur for creating a fake Instagram account impersonating a reputed silk‑saree showroom. He sold a low‑quality sari to a customer in Salem, claiming it was genuine Kanchi silk, and was arrested after the victim reported the fraud. Both cases underline police warnings to verify online content and sellers before making payments.
