India Awaits Nirav Modi’s Extradition After Completion of UK Court Proceedings

The Ministry of External Affairs said extradition of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi will proceed once the pending judicial proceedings in the United Kingdom are concluded. Modi has been detained in a London prison since 2019 and is wanted by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate for his alleged role in a multi‑billion‑dollar Punjab National Bank fraud.

India reiterated its commitment to repatriate economic offenders, noting that prior UK challenges—including a petition to the European Court of Human Rights and a March rejection by the High Court of Justice—have been rejected. A recent London court also ordered Modi to pay more than $10.7 million to Bank of India. The remarks addressed comments by former UK Home Secretary Priti Patel concerning deportation procedures.
