India: Baby born with four arms and four legs suspected to be parasitic twin
A baby born in the Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh, India, has been identified by medical professionals as a potential case of a ‘parasitic twin’. The infant, weighing approximately 3kg, was born to a 29-year-old woman with four arms and four legs.
The additional limbs are attached to the upper chest and abdominal area of the infant. Medical experts suggest this is a rare form of asymmetric conjoined twins, where one twin develops relatively normally while the other remains partially developed and dependent on the healthy twin for blood circulation.
The infant and mother have been moved to a regional hospital, and the baby is scheduled to be transferred to a medical college in Bhopal for specialized testing. Doctors plan to use imaging technology, such as CT and MRI scans, to determine how the extra limbs are connected to the baby’s bones, blood vessels, and internal organs. This information is critical to assessing the feasibility and complexity of potential separation surgery.
