India's envoy meets Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman to discuss bilateral ties

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka to discuss strengthening bilateral ties amid recent diplomatic tensions. The meeting follows friction caused by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent virtual media interaction from New Delhi, where she expressed her intention to return to Bangladesh in December. The Bangladesh government criticized the event, stating it hurt national sentiments.

During the discussions, Prime Minister Rahman emphasized the need for a “conducive environment” to advance relations and urged India to expedite the extradition of Sheikh Hasina. India has stated it is examining the extradition request in accordance with its legal procedures and maintains that it had no involvement in Hasina’s recent media appearance.

Additionally, India has invited Rahman to attend the outreach session of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi this September in his capacity as the current Chair of BIMSTEC. High Commissioner Trivedi expressed optimism that direct dialogue between the leaders of both nations could resolve outstanding bilateral issues.
