India bank strike scheduled for September 28-30

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called for a three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30, 2026. The primary demands of the unions include the implementation of a five-day banking week and revisions to the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

To mitigate potential disruptions, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Ministry of Finance have directed public sector banks and regional rural banks to remain operational on Sunday, September 27. Private sector banks, including HDFC Bank, have also announced they will keep branches open on Sunday to facilitate essential transactions.

To further assist customers, the State Bank of India (SBI) has announced a temporary waiver of ATM transaction charges for the duration of the strike period, applicable even for transactions at other banks' ATMs. While physical branch services such as cash deposits, withdrawals, and cheque clearances may be affected during the strike, digital services including UPI, internet banking, and mobile banking are expected to continue operating normally.
