India battery energy storage capacity grows 84% in H1 2026

India’s battery energy storage capacity grew by 84% year-on-year in the first half of 2026. According to Mercom India Research, the country added 8.2 GWh of capacity during this period, bringing the cumulative installed capacity to 9.3 GWh by June 2026.

Standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) represented 83% of the cumulative capacity. Other configurations included solar-plus-wind with storage at 9% and solar-plus-storage at 8%.

Geographically, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra accounted for more than 60% of the total cumulative installed capacity, with Rajasthan holding a 36% share, Gujarat 20%, and Maharashtra 5%. The growth is attributed to utilities utilizing the technology for grid balancing, peak demand management, and the integration of renewable energy.
