INDIA bloc announces nationwide protests against Election Commission

The INDIA bloc, a major opposition alliance in India, has announced a nationwide protest campaign against the Election Commission of India (ECI). The decision follows a coordination meeting in New Delhi where leaders accused the ECI of malpractices and undermining democratic institutions through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The alliance's roadmap includes district-level ‘Save Democracy’ marches from October 2 to October 8, and a march by all opposition Members of Parliament to the ECI headquarters on October 6. Additionally, leaders plan to seek an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu in the second week of October to present their concerns. The bloc has also scheduled five major rallies across the country, culminating in a large-scale demonstration in Delhi on November 1.

Key demands from the opposition include the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the use of pre-SIR electoral rolls for future elections, and a return to using ballot papers instead of electronic voting machines (EVMs). The alliance also intends to appeal to the Supreme Court to expedite pending cases related to electoral irregularities and the SIR process.
