INDIA bloc leaders petition Supreme Court over electoral roll revision

Opposition leaders in India, led by Rahul Gandhi and the INDIA bloc, have filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The petitioners allege widespread irregularities and voter deletions, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the formation of an independent committee to oversee the process.

The Supreme Court Registry has flagged 14 technical defects in the petition, including a ₹220 shortfall in court fees, missing signatures from several leaders, and illegible identification documents. The registry noted that the case cannot be officially listed for hearing until these procedural errors are corrected.

In response to the allegations, Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the Congress party, suggesting they are using the SIR process as an excuse for their electoral losses. He urged the opposition to engage in self-reflection rather than questioning democratic institutions.
