INDIA bloc leaders march in Delhi demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar's resignation
Opposition leaders from the INDIA bloc staged a massive protest march in New Delhi on October 6, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration, which included prominent figures such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Akhilesh Yadav, was organized to protest alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Protesters accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of manipulating voter lists and undermining democratic processes. The march, which aimed for the ECI headquarters at Nirvachan Sadan, was intercepted by Delhi Police near the NITI Aayog office. This led to a standoff where opposition MPs sat on the road and some, including Rahul Gandhi, climbed over police barricades in protest.
Heavy security was deployed across the capital, with thousands of police personnel and Rapid Action Force (RAF) units stationed near Parliament and government buildings. The controversy follows reports that two Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, had raised numerous objections regarding decisions made without their knowledge. While the ECI has rejected all allegations of wrongdoing, stating that differing views are a normal part of institutional deliberations, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear petitions regarding the conduct of the poll body and the SIR process.
