Gyanesh Kumar: Opposition demands CEC resignation amid nationwide protests

Nationwide protests are erupting across India against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, with opposition parties demanding his immediate resignation. The demonstrations, led by the INDIA bloc and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), center on allegations of electoral irregularities during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls. Protesters claim the process has resulted in the large-scale, unauthorized deletion of legitimate voters.

In Delhi, security has been heavily intensified, with reports of over 20,000 security personnel deployed to manage crowds at Jantar Mantar and near Rashtrapati Bhavan. High-profile arrests have occurred, including CJP founder Abhijit Deepke and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, amid clashes between police and demonstrators. The heavy police presence has led to accusations from Congress leaders that the central government is turning the capital into a “fortress” to suppress dissent.

Protests have also been reported in major cities including Patna, Bengaluru, Lucknow, and Hyderabad. In Patna, Tejashwi Yadav led a march against the Election Commission, while in Hyderabad, the BRS party announced plans to protest the SIR process. The BJP has dismissed these allegations, accusing opposition leaders of attempting to destabilize the country and spreading unsubstantiated claims to create anarchy.
