INDIA bloc protests against Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls

Opposition parties in the INDIA bloc are intensifying protests against the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The alliance accuses the process of being anti-democratic and alleges that it has systematically disenfranchised millions of eligible voters across the country, including an estimated 13 crore people nationwide.

In Tamil Nadu, leaders from the DMK and the newly joined Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) have staged agitations in Chennai. TVK officials claim the SIR specifically targets youth under 30, women, and marginalized communities. DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi stated that 74 lakh voters in Tamil Nadu have lost their rights due to the exercise.

The opposition is demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the complete scrapping of the SIR process. The INDIA bloc has planned a major national-level mobilization at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on November 1, with further coordinated protests planned for Bengaluru and other districts in Karnataka on November 5.
