India has completed the construction of its first rock check dam on the Indus River at Upshi in the Leh district of Ladakh. Built entirely from natural boulders without the use of cement or concrete, the structure has successfully raised the river's water level by approximately 10 feet.

The dam has a storage capacity of nearly 40 million litres. This increased water level allows for more efficient irrigation via the Igoo Phey canal, addressing long-standing water scarcity issues for local farmers who previously struggled to pump water from the river's deep gorges during the spring sowing season.

The project holds strategic importance as India seeks to enhance water infrastructure in border regions amid the current abeyance of the Indus Waters Treaty. Following this successful pilot, the Ladakh administration has submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti for 36 additional check dam projects across the Union Territory. This proposal, estimated to cost over Rs 56 crore, includes seven Himalayan Rock Check Dams in the Leh region and 29 reinforced cement concrete dams in the Kargil region.
