India Cabinet raises EPFO mandatory wage ceiling to Rs 25,000

The Indian Union Cabinet has approved an increase in the mandatory wage ceiling for coverage under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The monthly salary limit will rise from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000.

This decision is expected to bring between 51 lakh and 1 crore additional employees under mandatory social security coverage. The expansion provides access to provident fund savings, the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), and the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI). The government stated the move reflects sustained wage growth and the expansion of formal employment since the last revision in September 2014.

The implementation is scheduled to begin on September 17. Financially, the enhancement is estimated to result in an annual government expenditure of approximately Rs 11,339 crore, with a total estimated cost of Rs 56,696 crore over a five-year period.
