Repsol warns 90% of crude supply fails EU methane rules

Repsol has warned that approximately 90% of its crude oil supply contracts do not meet new European Union environmental regulations regarding methane. These rules are scheduled to take effect on January 1.

CEO Luis Cabra stated that the company is being forced to sign these contracts because most suppliers are failing to provide the necessary data to verify compliance. He noted that without these supplies, Repsol might face the necessity of closing refineries by January 1, 2027.

While the European Commission previously urged member states not to impose fines for three years, Cabra emphasized that a lack of sanctions does not equate to legal compliance. He indicated that Repsol is prepared to fight any attempts at regulation or sanctions in court.
