India's ODI series loss to England highlights fitness concerns

India lost the three‑match ODI series to England 2‑1, with the decisive third match at Lord's ending in a 27‑run defeat (England 387/3, India 360/7). Captain Shubman Gill said the team's expensive death‑overs spell – conceding 62 runs in the final three overs – was the turning point.

Gill also warned that a spate of injuries to key players – pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, all‑rounder Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana and others – disrupted the side’s combinations throughout the tour. He stressed that the squad’s inability to field a fully fit XI jeopardises their preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup and called for a major overhaul of fitness standards.

The series also saw standout batting from Rohit Sharma (138) and Shubman Gill (77) for India, but the inexperienced bowling attack struggled, with multiple bowlers conceding 20+ runs in the death overs. The loss has sparked criticism of team selection and highlighted the need for improved conditioning ahead of upcoming international commitments.
