India Celebrates Bakrid 2026 Across the Country
Bakrid 2026, also known as Eid al‑Adha, is being observed throughout India on the 10th day of Dhu al‑Hijjah. The festival commemorates the Abrahamic test of faith, when Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his son Ishmael and was instead provided a ram by divine intervention. Muslims gather for a special two‑rak‘ah prayer at mosques or open grounds, after which a halal animal—typically a goat, sheep, camel or cow—is sacrificed.
The meat from the sacrifice is divided into three equal portions: one for the needy, one for relatives and friends, and one for the family. The day is also marked by festive greetings and the sharing of wishes, with many people sending messages and quotes that emphasize joy, brotherhood and blessings.
These celebrations underscore the themes of devotion, generosity and communal solidarity that are central to the holiday.
