India celebrates Gandhi Jayanti 2026

India will observe Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, 2026, marking the 157th birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The national holiday includes prayer meetings at Raj Ghat in New Delhi and various cultural activities to honor the freedom fighter.

Since 2007, the United Nations has also recognized October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence. Modern interpretations of Gandhi’s principles suggest applying his values of truth and non-violence to the digital age, such as practicing respectful discourse on social media and verifying information to combat AI-generated deepfakes and misinformation.
