India celebrates National Renewable Energy Day
India celebrates National Renewable Energy Day, also known as Akshay Urja Day, annually on August 20. Established by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in 2004, the day commemorates the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
The initiative aims to raise awareness regarding the importance of sustainable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and water, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and combat climate change. To mark the occasion, the MNRE organizes various seminars, workshops, and cultural programs across the country.
In Rajasthan, officials noted that the state ranks second in India for renewable energy capacity, exceeding 50,000 MW. Leaders from Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have used the occasion to advocate for the adoption of green energy to ensure environmental protection and national energy self-reliance.
