India-China Lipulekh Pass border trade postponed

The traditional border trade between India and China via the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand has been delayed again. The first consignments were to leave on 8 July, but Indian traders were unable to reach Taklakot because the market, shops and warehouses on the Chinese side are not yet completed. Approximately 100 traders from the Gunjhi and Nabhidang areas are waiting for a new date, which China has not announced.

Chinese officials say a dedicated trade building with rental shops and storage will be ready before any movement is permitted. Indian authorities have completed their side of the preparations, issued trade passes to about 100 traders and cleared customs procedures, but the lack of Chinese facilities means no crossing can occur. The trade, halted after the 2020 border standoff, had generated about ₹3 crore in 2019 and is expected to revive local economies once operational.
