Coal India achieves record monthly production and supply in October
Coal India Limited (CIL) reported record-breaking operational milestones for October 2026, marking its 51st Foundation Day. The state-owned miner achieved its highest-ever monthly coal supply of 70.3 million tonnes (MT), a 19 percent increase compared to the previous year. Total coal production also reached a historic high of 67.2 MT.
Supplies to the power sector hit an unprecedented 57.1 MT during the month, up 19 percent year-on-year. This surge in domestic output coincides with rising energy demands in India, as power consumption grew by 21.88 percent to 159.76 billion units in October, driven by industrial demand and festival season activities.
Logistical improvements contributed to the record, with railway coal evacuation reaching a monthly average of 310 rakes per day for the power sector. While domestic production has increased, the Ministry of Coal noted that August 2026 saw a 5.83 percent decline in total coal imports to 104.57 MT, reflecting ongoing efforts to reduce reliance on overseas supplies.
