India condemns attack on vessel off Oman; 10 crew rescued, 1 missing

A commercial container ship, the GFS Galaxy, was attacked off the coast of Oman on 12 July 2026. Indian officials said 11 Indian nationals were aboard; ten were rescued and one sailor remains missing. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement condemning the attack, describing repeated assaults on commercial shipping in the region as “deeply worrisome” and urging an immediate de‑escalation of tensions. The MEA thanked Omani authorities for their support and said the Indian Embassy in Oman was coordinating the search‑and‑rescue effort.

U.S. Central Command reported that the vessel was disabled by fire and extensive engine‑room damage, accusing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of the strike. The incident coincided with Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and renewed U.S. strikes on Iranian targets, heightening worries over the strategic waterway that carries about one‑fifth of global oil trade. The Indian foreign ministry called for the restoration of free and unimpeded navigation in accordance with international law.
