India condemns planned Khalistan referendum in Canada

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a strong condemnation of anti-India activities occurring in Canada, specifically targeting a planned referendum by the banned pro-Khalistan separatist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). The event is scheduled to take place in Edmonton on October 18.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized India's stance on national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Indian government has criticized Canada's perceived leniency toward separatist groups. This position is supported by a report from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), which was tabled in the Canadian Parliament. The CSIS report acknowledged that Canada-based Khalistani elements pose a national security threat to Canada and its interests through involvement in violent extremist activities.

Additionally, reports indicate that SFJ founder Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has proposed the formation of a 'Khalistan Army' and a 'Sikh Homeland Security' force. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact of such radicalization on diaspora youth in both Canada and the United States.
