India corruption probes: CBI case backlogs and Chhattisgarh PSC arrests

A report from the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) reveals that over 7,200 corruption cases investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are currently pending trial in various courts. The data shows significant delays in the judicial process, with 409 cases having been pending for more than two decades. As of December 31, 2025, the breakdown of pending trials includes 2,447 cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act that have lasted between 10 and 20 years.

In a separate development regarding corruption in Chhattisgarh, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Utkarsh Chandrakar as part of a money laundering investigation into the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission (CGPSC). The probe concerns alleged irregularities and nepotism in appointments made between 2020 and 2022. The ED conducted searches at seven locations, including the residence of KK Chandrakar, the former personal assistant to former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. This investigation follows a CBI probe into the same recruitment irregularities.
