India dairy sectors see infrastructure expansion and price hikes

The dairy sectors in Bihar and Odisha are undergoing significant developments aimed at supporting milk producers and increasing processing capabilities.

In Bihar, a proposed ₹350-crore dairy processing plant is planned for the Champaran region. The facility is expected to have a capacity of approximately four lakh litres of milk per day. This expansion follows the growth of the Bapudham Milk Producer Organization, which currently collects 1.5 lakh litres daily from over 1,500 villages and supports more than 67,000 farmers. The project aims to strengthen regional supply chains and improve market linkages.

In Odisha, the state government has announced a ₹2 per litre increase in the milk procurement price for farmers connected to primary dairy cooperative societies, effective September 11. The decision, announced by Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Minister Gokulananda Mallick, is intended to benefit over three lakh farmers and encourage participation in the organized dairy sector. Additionally, the state plans to establish 1,200 new dairy cooperative societies to further expand the network.
