India data center capacity projected to grow fourfold by 2030
India's data center sector is undergoing rapid expansion, driven by high cloud adoption and the demand for AI-intensive workloads. According to an Anarock report, the industry's capacity is projected to grow fourfold, reaching 101 million square feet by 2030 from 27 million square feet in the first half of 2026. This growth is supported by investment commitments exceeding $300 billion.
Major investments include a $15 billion commitment from Google for a facility in Visakhapatnam and a $1.7 billion investment by the Colt DC-RMZ joint venture in Mumbai and Chennai. Additionally, Reliance has announced a 168-megawatt AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, intended for use by Meta.
The shift toward high-density GPU deployments is also transforming infrastructure requirements. There is an increasing demand for liquid-cooling solutions to manage thermal loads. To support this, Schneider Electric has opened a new liquid cooling manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, producing coolant distribution units and direct-to-chip hardware to reduce reliance on imports.
Industry leaders, including Equinix, note that the focus is shifting from simple megawatt capacity to the value of connectivity and proximity to networks, as enterprises require complex combinations of cloud connectivity and GPU-intensive computing.
