India readies for England T20 series as Sooryavanshi debut hangs in balance

India entered the England tour after a surprising 0‑2 defeat to Ireland in Belfast, with both openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma falling for ducks. The loss prompted criticism of the team’s preparation and sparked calls for a more adaptable batting approach, as noted by former captain Sunil Gavaskar and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate.

The Men in Blue will now play a five‑match T20 International series against England from 1 July to 11 July at venues in Chester‑le‑Street, Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol and Southampton, followed by three ODIs on 14, 16 and 19 July. India’s squad retains teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 776 runs at a 237 strike‑rate in the 2026 IPL, but he was omitted from the Ireland matches. Captain Shreyas Iyer said the team’s selection is “private” and that Sooryavanshi will debut when the combination permits, while coach Ten Doeschate stressed he is ready but must “bide his time.”

England announced their opening XI without fast bowler Jofra Archer, resting him after recent Test duties, and fielding a side led by Harry Brook. The series offers India a chance to bounce back and for Sooryavanshi to potentially earn his first senior cap.
