India delivers 250 MT of Bailey bridges to Sri Lanka

India has delivered a new consignment of Bailey bridges, weighing over 250 metric tonnes, to Sri Lanka. The shipment is part of a USD 450 million reconstruction package provided by India following Cyclone Ditwah.

During an official ceremony, India’s Deputy High Commissioner Maitrey K transferred the materials to Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Co-operative Development, Upali Samarasinghe. Indian Army engineers will be responsible for installing the bridges across the island to restore vital connectivity and address transport bottlenecks in isolated communities.

The assistance follows a visit to Colombo by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who met with Sri Lankan leadership to review ongoing cooperation. In addition to the bridge supplies, bilateral efforts include INR-denominated Line of Credit agreements, including USD 250 million for railway initiatives and USD 100 million for livestock development.
