India Demolishes Illegal Commercial Structures in Gurugram as Court Highlights JNNURM Housing Issues

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority demolished about 20 illegal commercial establishments—including shops, workshops and eateries—on government land in Sector 42 along Golf Course Road after confirming ownership with the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran. The demolition followed legal notices and resident complaints about congestion and safety. GMDA nodal officer R S Batth said, “Illegal occupation of government land and unauthorised commercial activities will not be tolerated.”

Separately, the Delhi High Court raised concerns over thousands of flats built under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). A bench led by Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia noted that projects by DUSIB and DSIIDC were “inhabitable,” despite a Rs 2,000 crore investment. The court questioned the waste of taxpayer money and ordered repairs, while residents disputed relocation plans.
