Former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in exile in India since August 5 2024 after a student‑led uprising toppled her government, addressed an audio‑only virtual press conference organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi on August 5. In the address she announced she will return to Bangladesh in December, despite the risk of arrest, imprisonment or execution.

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in absentia for crimes against humanity linked to the 2024 crackdown, which the United Nations estimates killed about 1,400 people. The Bangladeshi foreign ministry called the event an affront to sovereignty, banned local media from broadcasting her speech and urged India to prevent her from using Indian territory for political activity, seeking her extradition. India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded that the event is a private media initiative and the government has no involvement or endorsement. The ban on her Awami League party remains, and Bangladesh has asked for it to be lifted.

Analysts describe the announcement as a power move that could affect Bangladesh’s political future and bilateral ties with India.
