India denies involvement in Sheikh Hasina's virtual Delhi media address

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it has no role in the virtual press conference that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hold from New Delhi on August 5. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that the event is organised by a private media entity and the government does not endorse any views expressed.

Hasina, 78, has been living in self‑imposed exile in India since her government was toppled by student‑led protests in 2024 and was sentenced to death in absentia for alleged crimes against humanity. Bangladesh has asked India to prevent her from using Indian territory for political activity, warning that it could destabilise the country and damage bilateral ties. In response, Dhaka has barred its media from broadcasting Hasina’s remarks and urged India’s cooperation.

The virtual address will be hosted by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia and will also feature Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and other Awami League leaders. The episode comes as Bangladesh continues to seek Hasina’s extradition and as both nations work to improve relations ahead of a forthcoming BRICS summit.
