India denounces UN Human Rights Office over Delhi protest remarks

India has formally rejected remarks from the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) regarding the detention of protesters in New Delhi. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal characterized the UN's comments as “unwarranted and unacceptable,” labeling them as interference in India’s internal affairs.

Indian officials accused the OHCHR of “extreme selectivity” and “double standards,” arguing that the organization fails to comment on similar protests or law enforcement actions in other regions, including the West and neighboring countries. Anuj Swarup, first secretary at India’s UN Mission in Geneva, warned that such selective approaches undermine the credibility of the organization and lead to a “loss of faith in multilateralism.”

In a related legal development, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court of India regarding recent protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CAJPA). Kumar offered an unconditional apology to the court in a contempt case and maintained that police actions, including the regulation of metro services, were necessary, lawful, and intended to prevent the breakdown of public order in the capital.
