India deports nearly 5,000 Bangladeshis from West Bengal

India has deported almost 5,000 Bangladeshi nationals as part of a crackdown on undocumented migration after the Bharatiya Janata Party won a sweeping victory in West Bengal. State Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said 4,800 migrants have already been sent back and that detention centres have been set up in every district to process those classified as illegal entrants not covered by the Citizenship Amendment Act. An additional 836 people remain in holding facilities, with further deportations planned.

The operation follows long‑standing political tension over cross‑border migration, with rights groups warning that the campaign targets vulnerable Muslim communities. India and Bangladesh are scheduled to hold border‑force talks in New Delhi to address security and humanitarian concerns.
