India develops domestic AI framework for military use
India is advancing its defense capabilities by developing a domestic artificial intelligence layer for military services. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh stated that the nation is working to build its own AI for decision support, target acquisition, and data fusion to ensure technological sovereignty and prevent critical system exposure.
To support this initiative, India is mobilizing national compute resources and collaborating with selected private industry partners. While the priority remains self-reliance, Singh noted that selective partnerships with trusted allies may be pursued for critical technologies.
Additionally, Member of Parliament Kamaljeet Sehrawat highlighted that India has established a domestic framework to evaluate the trustworthiness of AI in defense, focusing on reliability, safety, and transparency. India also remains active in international disarmament discussions, including the United Nations' informal exchanges on AI in the military domain and commitments to protocols regarding land mines and explosive remnants of war.
